Chenquieh!

Just back from a screening of Borat, which I found to be much funnier than I thought it might have been (since I wasn't such a big fan of Borat before). The pseudo documentary style follows Borat as he goes from his proud home in Kazakhstan to America to explore the American culture and hopefully pick up their customs and way of life, of course things don't go according to plan. Borat falls in love with Pamela Anderson (having watched her on cable tv in a episode of Baywatch) and plans to marry her.

I really enjoyed the movie although it frequently goes beyond the pale and breaks any taboos (if there are any these days in movies) as Borat innocently shocks the American people with his customs and manners ("I sleeps with my mother in law" "I want to take a shit!" "Can you install a pussy magnet in this car?" "My sister, 4th best prostitute in Kazahkstan" (after snogging her). I also noticed it was directed by Larry Charles who directed episodes for Curb your enthusiam and Seinfield, so it did kind of have that same kind of semi realistic docu feel to it, and in a way Borat was a foreign version of Larry David, as he wonders ineptly round from one situation to another (with totally bemused americans). There are some parts where you can see what's coming though and naturally what he did to Pamela Anderson was totally staged, but other than though Borat was a great laugh. Chenquieh, Borat!

Coincidences and Superman IV!

A word of warning to the uninitiated but if you have ever considered watching Superman IV: A Quest for Peace, don't. It is a total mockery to the Superman series, it is poorly made with dreadful special effects, in fact its amazing they even got the original cast members back to make this piece of crap. I mention of course as the Christopher Reeve box set came out this week, which is apart from that, somewhat excellently packaged, and Soups 1, 2 and (yes) 3 are still in my favs list.

On an entirely separate note I put on the TV tonight to see Jonathan Ross interview Courtney Love and she looked uncannily like a girl that worked in our office until today (as she finished up) this is the girl i had a fall out with over a cup (I deleted that blog post cos it seemed a bit unecessary to keep it on). Funnily enough Courtney Love came across almost like a reasonable human being for once on the show, and she looked rather good too (well better than she used to), mind you she has finally cleaned up her act and gotten off the drugs (probably still working her way through the celebs though).

Doctor Who another box set

I noticed the second series of Doc Who is out on DVD Box set on Monday, admittedly I'm not as thrilled about it as I was last year simply because this year's season has been a bit hit and miss. It's not been quite up to the standard of last year's thrilling intro to Who again and I guess we've had a slew of Doctor Who features and extras for this year's series (through BBC confidential, extra games, TARIDSODES, commentaries on the website etc) that my main response has to be: big deal, as I feel they've already overdone the merchandise. If last year's DVD box set was like owning the Star Wars Original Trilogy, this year's will feel like owning the Attack of the Clones (or something like it).

Nonetheless I will at some point purchase it, just not immediately, and this year's series has been enjoyable just not up to the standard it could have been (still its better than Torchwood I have to say, imho).
